Again about Contrapoints. I was considering trying to translate her videos to french (and honestly, well it's pretty obvious when I'm writing here, but my english is far from perfect). Because I honestly love her work and I love english, I have too much spare time, why not give it a try.
So I just launched her last video ("Opulence") which starts with "Oh, hey gorg. How are you gorg?". And I'm writing on my excel page "Oh, salut beauté. Comment ça va, beauté ?" and It's feel just so wrong It makes me laugh:yawn:.

@Ada or ardor I've tried my hand at translating, a bit (I'm back in school and it's an exercise I have to do from time to time) and honestly it's way harder than I thought it would be - also in part 'coz I put des anglicismes everywhere in my french, far more than I thought I did. One doesn't need an excellent english to be good at translation - or to be more precise it's okay if your production in english isn't perfect, what you need most is a good understanding of the language.

Also, translating youtube videos is fun, but omg does it takes forever!

@AprilMayJune : I've spent a whole hour on one minute and a half, but it's ok, I knew it .
I do think I have a better understanding of it than writing :hesite:.
I'm not sure at all it will be a long-time project (first, Contrapoints never asked for someone to translate her video as far as I know, and not sure I will be up to do it for 40 hours - put aside I would definitively need someone to read after my mess ).

What are you studying April ? (if it's not too personal)

@Ada or ardor Starting translation with an entire Contrapoints videos is hardcore :d

I'm in a double licence, history and english. Parts of it are easy (I already know a lot of the things we're being taught, so everything is familiar and boring even) and parts of it aren't (learning how to do an entire commentaire de texte, the three hour commute and not having any time for anything else because of it). So far it's going okay.

How did you discover Contrapoints? Do you follow any other leftwing youtuber? :d I am happy to have a conversation with you

@AprilMayJune : So cool you can go back to university!

I don't remember exactly :hesite:. She has been in my "watch later" playlist since a long time, but her videos were too long for me to stay focus on without subtitles! Three weeks / one month ago, a friend was talking about her on twitter, so I tried it again, and I discovered she has really good subtitles. Plus her last video is about something I was interested about, so it went fast (as fast as can be, it's still 20 to 40 minutes videos).

Not really! :gonk: I've seen you talked about Olly earlier? (what is the name of her/his channel?)
I'm curious about these obscure youtuber with their giant essays .
But, I was thinking about it, the podcast Trump 2020 on Slate (french Slate) gives really good insights about the US politics. I've also really enjoyed the two first season of The good fight, a TV show which starts with the Trump election. But maybe your not the most ignorant person about these subjects and it would be redundant for you!

@Ada or ardor Olly is Oliver Thorn, aka PhilosophyTube, a friend of Contrapoints. His channel touches on a lot more subjects than Contrapoints' who's mainly focused on gender. If you like Contrapoints his is worth a shot imo!

I don't have that many video essayists I like. I follow donoteat01 as well, who does great history lessons about the city of Philadelphia Franklin, along with a leftist/commie commentary of it which I like. I find it neat because I'm a history/urbanism nerd (and if I hadn't been a rebellious teen who gave up on the idea of school and all, I would have done un bac ES because SES had potential yknow!) and it also gives some insight on all the talks about gentrification that's going on in the US; but I ain't certain his videos are going to be interesting to watch for someone's who's not me.

Annoyingly, the youtube algorithm has a tendency to show me stuff I already know, it's not a helpful tool to discover new stuff (and I think it's also part of the reason why there's so little french stuff I follow). So I don't have much to offer really.

I've had a hard time getting into podcasts - I can't always listen to audio stuff (I don't have headphones and sometimes the room needs to be silent 'cuz somebody else is working or something) and I have a hard time focusing on a podcast because it involves not doing anything else.

That being said, I have giant commute times now, and I can't read or do much of anything during those commute times, so I was thinking of getting some good headphones and a sort of audio reader as soon as I could. I was thinking audiobooks, but I'd like to find interesting podcasts as well - I could give Slate's a try. (I know stuff about US politics, true - but what's going on right now is very interesting, especially if you ignore how fear-inducing it all is. Political parties imploding, populist movements, a giant move to an authoritarian right, and a giant move to a socialist left, oh my! I never thought I'd see americans self-describe themselves as socialists one day.)

Do you have podcasts you like?

I've made it til 5 minutes :danse:(that's still 1/10 :cretin:)

(I've started answering you @AprilMayJune it's just.. long )

Edit : Hey, that's super fucking great, that's mega coconuts, there is already french subtitles on the caption stuff on youtube. I don't really know how this all work, but I guess they need final review and it' will be uploaded soon .

@Ada or ardor Congrats on the milestone! The french subtitles appearing is probably because you're not the only one working on translating it - I know on some vids it's like that, there's a lot of people translating, and oftentimes it's also useful to have someone to review everything and clean up the mistakes and the synchronizing issues and all the like n stuff.

And no worries on the time you take to answer :d Don't feel pressured!

Have you seen The great hack, l'affaire Cambridge Analytica? (on Netflix)
(sorry, I spitting out recos on you :ninja:)

Hm, it's only french podcasts. I enjoy very much Community manager, about weird web communities. It's really the best, most fun podcast ever - not always though, it's just that the last episode was about the peeps who drink their own pee to cure everything, with true historical facts on old parisian "sanisettes" (ancient men's toilets :winky:). Disgusting on the edge tho!
Laisse-moi kiffer de Madmoizelle is pretty fun too (they talk about their favorites stuff).
I like Programme B by Binge audio : everyday they invite someone to talk about a topic in particular. The quality varies a lot depending of the person invited. Sometimes, it's an old boring university teacher, sometimes it's ok ! My favorites were the one about Epstein and Tecktonik : danser, mourir, recommencer (several episodes about Tecktonik danse, with great work on the music, really moving - and yes I know the tecktonik is the most outdated thing ever - that's the point !. It's also a bit nostalgic, because I was a teenager at the time, and my main goal in life was to go to the Metropolis club, even though I already perceived Tecktonik as something really lame!).
Le Tchip gives me that same experience of coziness than Laisse-moi kiffer, except they talk about black culture (I like when the people doing the podcast have a good chemistry).
Parler comme jamais about linguistic and french langage (I love Laélia Véron, she's a researcher and very accessible).
Oh, I forgot Transfert on Slate. A person talks about his or her life, at least one thing that has happened, again, really moving, and often times breathtaking.

But hey there is a whole topic about that question if you want to explore tons of podcasts!

Definitively gonna watch Philosophy tube, and I'll try Donoteat01 (but yeah, it's maybe too specific for me!). Thank you!
